LASIK Eye Surgery in Cape Town: What You Need to Know

What Is LASIK and Why Choose It?
LASIK (Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis) is a popular and advanced form of vision correction. Surgeons perform LASIK under a protective layer of corneal tissue. As a result, there is:

  • Less tissue to heal

  • Reduced risk of scarring or haze

  • Minimal postoperative discomfort

  • Faster recovery – often within 24 hours

LASIK treats a wide range of vision issues, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. While results vary slightly between individuals, most patients enjoy clear vision without glasses. In fact, many are able to pass a driver’s license test without corrective lenses just days after surgery. Many call the results “life-changing.”

Who Is a Good Candidate for LASIK?

You may qualify for LASIK in Cape Town if you:

  • Are 18 years or older

  • Have stable vision for at least 12 months

  • Are nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism

  • Have not achieved your desired results from previous eye surgeries (e.g., RK or cataract surgery)

However, LASIK may not be suitable if you have cataracts, keratoconus, keratoglobus, uncontrolled diabetes, or immune disorders. Speak with your doctor for personalised advice.

Your LASIK Preparation: The Preliminary Test

Before your procedure, we will perform a thorough eye exam and advanced diagnostic tests. To ensure accurate measurements, stop wearing:

  • Soft contact lenses 7 days before your appointment

  • Hard or RGP lenses 3 weeks before testing

This consultation lasts about 90 minutes. We will dilate your pupils, so please bring someone to drive you home afterward.

The LASIK Procedure: What to Expect

LASIK surgery is quick and virtually painless. We use only eye drops for numbing – no injections. Both eyes are usually treated on the same day.

During surgery:

  1. We create a protective corneal flap.

  2. You focus on a blinking light while the laser reshapes your cornea.

  3. The laser work lasts just a few seconds.

  4. We gently place the flap back in position – no stitches needed.

You’ll spend around 30 minutes in theatre, followed by a short recovery period before heading home.

Recovery After LASIK

Take three days to rest your eyes after surgery. You’ll receive medicated drops to prevent infection and reduce inflammation. Avoid rubbing or pressing on your eyes.

Here’s what you may experience during the first few days:

  • Blurry vision and light sensitivity

  • Scratchiness or dryness

  • Eye fatigue with prolonged screen use

  • Halos or glare at night

  • Vision that fluctuates slightly

These are all normal and should improve daily as your eyes heal. Most patients recover quickly with minimal discomfort.

Set Realistic Expectations

While LASIK offers excellent outcomes, results vary. Some patients may still need reading glasses or enhancements. There’s a very low risk of complications such as infection or undercorrection. However, our technology and safety protocols make LASIK a trusted and effective solution.
